Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Harry Potter. A series consisting of seven books everyone of you has already heard of at least once in your life. The review you will be reading now is about the first novel: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone…

I already read all the books once, but only in German. However, I convinced myself to start reading them in the original language and after finishing the first one I was amazed, that in English the book is even better!

The main character in this book is called Harry Potter. A boy whose wizard parents were killed by the darkest and most dangerous of them all: Voldemort. After the loss of his parents, baby Harry was given to the Dursleys, is relatives, where his real identity was held a secret. Until one day Hagrid (a half-giant wizard) came and dragged him out of his miserable life and told him everything. In addition to that Harry is sent to Hogwarts, a school for wizards, where he will get in a lot of trouble (very often), get to now lots of people, including his two best friends and get to learn everything about the wizard world. Divergent

The most compelling book we would like to recommend is called Divergent. We think it is a real page-turner.  The catchy storyline of Veronica Roth is a worldwide bestseller. It is a dystopian fiction; that means it set in the future, in the wake of a terrible war.

In this riveting book society consists of five factions called: Abnegation-the selfless; Dauntless- the brave; Erudite-the intelligent; Candor-the honest and Amity-the peaceful. Each faction has its own duties. At the age of sixteen you have to go through a so-called aptitude test, which finds out who you truly are. To test this, you get injected with a serum that causes a simulation in your head. Normally the test results show one faction, but there are also people whose test results are inconclusive: DIVERGENT

Being a Divergent is extremely dangerous and rare. Powerful people want to get rid of them, because they are said to be a threat to all the other factions. Divergents are immune to the serums, no one can control them against their will.

The main character is Beatrice Prior. She lives with her brother Caleb and her parents Andrew and Nathalie in an Abnegation house. She lives a selfless life, but she doesn’t feel like an Abngation, because she also cares about herself. The aptiudiude test showed her three possible factions: Abnegation, Dauntless and Erudite. The fact that she is sixteen and her inconclusive test results makes it even harder to choose the right faction.

Either she has to leave her family or start a new life in another faction?! But the most important thing for her is to hide that she is DIVERGENT.

When the Snow Fell

When the Snow Fell is a great book about a joung boy called Joel Gustafson, who lives a poor life. Annualy he does his new year resolution. For example he wants to sea the sea, but he hasn’t got a lot of money. There is also another new year resolution: He wants to find his mother. Is he going to manage that or any other of his wishes?

Anna’s Recomentation: I liked to read the book and I would read it all over again. It was interesting, because Joel’s life is much more different than mine. Only sometimes it was a bit boring.

Dora’s Recomentation: I haven’t read the book yet, but after listening to Anna I really want to read it. I think it sounds like a sad, but worthwhile story. Everyone of you, including me, has to read this novel!

 

Mary Poppins

Mary Poppins is a famous novel about an extraordinary nanny, who works for the Banks family. tTogether with the four children she experinences many adventures, but not normal things. No, it’s a book full of magic moments and funny scenes.

Dora’s Recomentation: I liked this compelling book, and it was written very well. I think I would have liked it more if I would have been a bit younger-but still you have to read it.

Anna’s Recomentation: I have heard about the book, but I never read it. But after you watch our video the same that happended to me will happen to you: You would love to read the book!
